Born on Jeju, a volcanic island on the Eurasian Plate, its civilization came not only from the sea but also from the northern mainland. Countless influences gathered in Jeju, blended, and transformed, shaping today’s Jeju as its ecology, geography, and way of life. In its 10th year, the 5th Jeju Biennale focuses on Jeju’s historical process of meeting northern civilizations, scattering (허끄다), gathering (모닥치다), and transforming (이야홍). For this, the Biennale takes the chorus '이야홍 (Iyahong)' from the Iyahong Taryeong that came from the mainland and became another native folk song of Jeju as its theme word and core concept. Through Jeju, where climate and the principles of living are deeply rooted, the Jeju Biennale presents ways of survival and the aesthetics shaped by things, nature, human life, and divinity (神性).
