The civilization that blossomed on Jeju, a volcanic island on the Eurasian plate, arrived not only from the sea but also from northern mainland civilizations. All kinds of elements scattered, gathered in Jeju, mingled, and transformed to shape the ecology, geography, and life of today's Jeju. Entering its tenth year, the 5th Jeju Biennale focuses on Jeju's dynamic process of encountering northern civilizations—dispersing (Heokkeuda), gathering (Modakchida), and transforming (Iyahong). To this end, the Biennale adopts "Iyahong," the refrain of the *Iyahong Taryeong*—a folk song that flowed in from the mainland and became another indigenous Jeju folk song—as its theme and core concept. Through Jeju, imbued with the principles of climate and sustenance, the Jeju Biennale seeks to present the modes of survival and their aesthetics, forged together by objects and nature, human life and divinity.
