*The food information at the festival site below is from last year (2025), and the 2026 details are being updated.* Gwangju Chooeokui Chungjang Festival is Gwangju's largest representative festival, launched on Chungjang-ro in Dong-gu, Gwangju, one of the top commercial districts in Gwangju and Jeonnam. With the universal theme of memory, it holds special meaning as Korea's first memory-themed festival, bridging generations and social classes. It creates a space for sharing cherished memories and making new ones, where people of all ages and backgrounds come together as one. In particular, because it unfolds around Geumnam-ro and 5.18 Democracy Square, places deeply meaningful in the history of global democracy, it carries historical and cultural value beyond a simple local festival. As a festival held at a holy ground of democratization, it symbolizes citizens overcoming past pain and moving toward a hopeful future. Its excellence has been recognized externally as well: it was selected as a 2024-2025 Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism cultural tourism festival and is now designated a Korea Honorary Cultural Tourism Festival. It also won the Best Parade Award at the 2024 Asia Pinnacle Awards and was named a World Festival City, then went on to receive the Best Overall Entertainment Program Award in 2025, achieving back-to-back international honors.
