Samrangseong, a historic fortress surrounding Jeondeungsa Temple, carries a legend that it was built by the three sons of Dangun to prevent foreign invasions. During the Goryeo period, when the royal court moved to Ganghwa Island to escape Mongol invasions, Samrangseong became a center of anti-Mongol resistance, where a 120-day Buddhist teaching assembly was held. It is also where the Joseon Chronicles were preserved for 250 years, the site of victory against French forces during the Byeong-in Yangyo incident, and where independence fighters won guerrilla battles against Japanese colonial rule during the final years of the Korean Empire. Throughout 5,000 years of Korean history, Samrangseong remains a symbol of national pride and resilience. The Samrangseong History and Culture Festival is held annually on the first Saturday of October to celebrate and share this distinguished heritage. This year marks the 26th edition of the festival.
