Romance-fantasy fans are pushing back on using The Remarried Empress, a 2018 novel, to dismiss today’s far more varied genre.

I don’t even particularly like The Remarried Empress or watch the drama, but when I see people dragging out a novel from 2018 and going, “Today’s romance fantasy is so messed up, only stupid b*tches who support class systems read it, this is why I don’t read romance fantasy~~~,” I want to body-slam them. You’re not progressive. You just want to act superior while trashing romance fantasy and all its readers as one group.

And is that even today’s romance fantasy? Even while it was being serialized, that work was already beyond conservative—pretty much peak conservatism.

What’s funny is that people who say they don’t read romance fantasy, by their own admission, don’t know the genre properly because they “don’t read it,” yet when they weigh in, they talk like they know everything about it... Even if they genuinely used to read it and then stopped, who would know it better in the end: people who still read it or people who don’t?

When someone says, “That’s the problem with it, so I don’t read it,” they need to realize they’re just looking at whatever confirms what they already want to see... It’s fine to be lazy, but I wish people wouldn’t treat their own laziness and ignorance like something doesn’t exist just because they don’t know about it.

Even if romance-fantasy readers consume works with problematic elements, people need to realize how absurd it is that this cycle of casually attacking the entire genre and everyone who likes it comes around every single time.

People are so bad about finding one thing to nitpick and opening a hate fest against the entire genre. Romance fantasy has plenty of popular works where the woman crushes everyone, clashes with the class system, or sells well without any romance at all, so go find one and enjoy.

Trends in the genre have completely flipped more than 10 times since The Remarried Empress came out. I don’t really read current releases either, but even 5–6 years ago, works were already pouring out at a level where you could pick exactly what suited you by searching for the tags you wanted. It’s absurd to read that one thing and talk like you’ve seen all of romance fantasy.

I read a ton of romance fantasy, and I do think Rashta’s setup and treatment in The Remarried Empress are unusual even for the genre. But it was funny to use that to bash all romance fantasy, and it was also funny to belittle everyone by saying, “If that makes you uncomfortable, how can you read romance fantasy?” Romance fantasy is incredibly varied... Just read something else.
