ENHYPEN (엔하이픈) 'Checkmate' Official MV

What happened

ENHYPEN released the official 'Checkmate' MV, a chess-themed track about calling checkmate on the world targeting them. Posted on HYBE LABELS under the THE SIN: BLISS banner and directed by Song Taejong with Kim Taeho as executive producer, it already draws a top comment marking fans' visits before 3 million views.

Why Koreans care

The chorus is English, but the imagery is carried by Korean phrasing that captions tend to flatten. In "절벽 끝에서 춤을 추는 객기" (jeolbyeok kkeuteseo chumeul chuneun gaekgi, the bravado of dancing on a cliff's edge), the key word 객기 (gaekgi, rash showy courage) is normally a mildly negative label for foolhardy bravado, so the song is wearing it as a badge of pride. In "마지막 한 칸, 뒤집히는 판" (majimak han kan, dwijiphineun pan, the last square, the board flipping over), 판 (pan, board or overall situation) means both a game board and the whole state of play, echoing the everyday idiom 판을 뒤집다 (paneul dwijipda, to flip the whole situation). The video description also walks buyers from the tagged product to Weverse Shop for the album with a YouTube Gift, so the MV page doubles as a storefront.

In the Korean comments

Fandom ritual (fandom): one top comment reads "Proof that you came by before it hit 3 million views," posted in both English and Korean, which treats an early visit as something to be stamped and counted rather than a reaction to the song. Member-first viewing (fandom): another commenter wrote, "I ran over in a hurry because they said Ni-ki is doing 애교 (aegyo, playful cute act)," which shows some viewers arriving for one member's moment rather than for the chess concept. Wish for relaxed members (fandom): a third wrote, "Seeing them enjoy themselves like this is so good, I'm tearing up. What the words mean

Three readings that tend to go wrong in translation. First, "더 미친 척 크게 외쳐 checkmate" (deo michin cheok keuge oechyeo checkmate, act even crazier and shout checkmate louder) turns on 척 (cheok, acting as if), so the line asks the listener to play at being mad on purpose, the same reckless posture as the cliff-dancing bravado, not to actually lose control. Second, the cliff-edge imagery can read as despair, yet "함께 벼랑 끝에 선 채 fight back" (hamkke byeorang kkeute seon chae fight back, standing together at the cliff's edge and fighting back) and "우릴 겨눈 세상 앞에 checkmate" (uril gyeonun sesang ape checkmate, checkmate in front of the world that aims at us) make the edge the launch point of a counterattack, with the group calling checkmate on the world. Third, in the comments, ㅜㅜㅜㅜ (crying-eyes text emoticon, here happy tears) after a line about loving the members' enjoyment signals being moved, not sadness.
