SKZ-ical: 8 (SKZ CODE) Ep.103

What happened

In this SKZ CODE episode (Ep.103) from Stray Kids' official channel, the members play a mock muscle competition called 스키지컬 (Seukijikeol, "SKZ-ical"). According to the auto captions, one member, 승민 (Seungmin), acts as MC and introduces the contestants. The first quest is about the forearm muscles, 전완근 (jeonwan-geun).

Why Koreans care

The title is a pun. The captions show the format is built on the word 피지컬 (pijikeol, "physical", meaning a person's build and athletic ability). "SKZ CODE" is written 스키즈 코드 (Seukijeu Kodeu) in the description, and 스키즈 (Seukijeu) is the short form of Stray Kids. Swapping 스키즈 (seu-ki-jeu, Stray Kids) into 피지컬 (pi-ji-keol, physical prowess) gives 스키지컬 (seu-ki-ji-keol, Stray Kids + physical wordplay). The captions also describe a rule unique to this show, the 피지컬 교환권 (pijikeol gyohwangwon, "physical exchange ticket"). Each contestant can once swap bodies with an eliminated player, who then takes their place in an event.

In the Korean comments

Two comments are birthday messages addressed to 승민 (seu-ng-min). Since the captions have him hosting, they read as messages to the episode's MC. One thanks him for his voice and for being "our pride". A separate short comment asks, in translation, "Where is 영복 (Yeongbok)?" That echoes the intro in the captions, which appear to say one contestant, named 영복 (yeong-bok), is absent because of their condition. The captions are garbled there, so treat that reading as tentative. Another comment simply says, in translation, that seeing 리노 (Lino) cry is unbearable, and one says 현진 (Hyunjin) "is smiling so much".

What the words mean

In the captions, a contestant says the body part he is most confident in is his 뇌지컬 (noejikeol). Another later says a contestant will bring "뇌지컬" (noe-ji-keol, brainpower wordplay) to the contest. This is a joke word: 뇌 (brain) plus 피지컬 (physical), meaning brainpower, or being smart about the game. It is a playful coinage, not a real anatomical or medical term. One commenter also writes that they may be the first fandom to get "한소리" (hansori) from their favorite group, and cites the song 'Farming'. Literally 한소리 (han-so-ri, scolding or rebuke) is "one word" or "one sound". As an idiom it means a scolding or a remark of rebuke. The comment does not say what the scolding was, so only the word's meaning is clear.
