Koo Kyo-hwan’s attitude at movie stage greetings has Twitter divided

Fans are split over whether Koo Kyo-hwan snubbed regulars at stage greetings or was simply maintaining reasonable boundaries.

Koo Kyo-hwan has always been moody, at least since Escape, and there are more than a few longtime fans who eventually unstanned after getting repeatedly passed over for fanservice and driven out of their minds. If you lined up all their receipts, they could probably sell out Auditorium 1 for Ball Guy. Before going into a stage greeting, my Twitter mutuals and I would literally greet each other with, “What kind of mood is he in today?” Anyone who never noticed was seriously lucky. There were plenty of tear-soaked receipts from fans who got driven crazy over it...

It’s hilarious how people are painting the fangirls who say they were treated like he hated fans as crazy Korean women who lost it because they didn’t get personalized fanservice. Go have him engage with everyone beside you, in front of you, and behind you while completely ignoring only you. Then, when it happens, don’t go writing some tearjerker about being treated with contempt for being a fan.

They said he treated fans based on his mood and made them walk on eggshells around him!! https://t.co/Lvx3yT9dbQ

@@; Exactly, he seems to hate those sketchbook pests who fucking follow him to every auditorium and ruin the vibe, like they’re the reason his movie flopped. Though those same people probably helped keep food on his table.

Why would he personally push away the fans who keep showing up and the Korean fangirls spending a shitload of money on his movies, while welcoming total normies, random members of the public, and newbie pests? This had been happening since Man-u, but it stayed buried because it was before the Gunche boom. It’s fucking hilarious that it’s only blowing up now.

Why are there so many people reciting definitions like, “Stage greetings are supposed to...” lol. Everyone knows they’re meant to help the movie do well. But it had already fl... flopped beyond saving, so couldn’t he at least have been a little warmer to the fans who added tens of thousands to the total audience? When did anyone ask him to play favorites or act like he knew them? They’re just asking not to be treated like they’re invisible.

Having a breakdown and spraying it in every direction are two different things. With one month left until the CSAT, he told a high school senior who wanted to apply to Seoul Institute of the Arts, “Yes! Go for attempt 3!” Is telling a high school senior to take it 3 times really something to joke about? https://t.co/hbpVgdGfaQ pic.twitter.com/Eh1nVWNVcN

It hurts when you don’t get a selfie. It hurts when you don’t get fanservice. It hurts me too. I’ve gone all that way just to watch him from a distance, and plenty of times he’s simply walked past me. But if you want him doing that only for the receipt crowd, then he’d need to hold private fan signings and you’d need to go to those. You already know he’s never going to do anything like that. How can you let this send you into a spiral?

I think everyone’s confused about something: a stage greeting isn’t a fan meeting, it’s literally just a stage greeting, so why are people this sensitive about who gets personalized fanservice?

Translated from X post

But seriously, am I the only one who finds it funny that he’s a good actor if he gives me personalized fanservice and a bad actor if he doesn’t? Maybe I feel this way because I’m a fan with zero desire to close the distance between us. It’s just fucking fascinating.

I think people seriously misunderstand what being a celebrity fan means. We consume the performances and images these people provide through singing, dancing, acting, variety shows, and so on. We aren’t consuming warm, devoted treatment from the people in those professions. Idol-fandom culture has spread everywhere, and people demand way too much emotional labor now.

I’m a fangirl too, but seriously, what are we supposed to do about fangirls’ massively inflated egos? It’s not like you guarantee overseas sales and help him get cast in projects the way Chinese unnie fans do. Why are you claiming fans who attend stage greetings moved him from indie films into commercial ones and boosted his audience numbers? You’re just one ticket. Mass appeal isn’t something you people can control.

Whatever else you say, isn’t attacking Koo Kyo-hwan over fanservice a huge reach? They keep calling him moody at stage greetings and all that, but asking him to prioritize the longtime regulars is basically asking him to play favorites with his little clique lol. You couldn’t say that after attending even one stage greeting. He runs all over the place trying to do something for everyone lol. If you want an actor who plays favorites with frequent, longtime fans, then go like one of those. I don’t get why they’re acting this way because he paid attention to regular moviegoers instead. They should just honestly say they were hurt that he didn’t privately tell fans about the marriage before it hit the news lol. Why try to bury someone with this much ridiculous bullshit and fabrication?

It’s not some idol fan-sign event where you’re 100% guaranteed something, and you didn’t pay specifically for that service, so why get angry about being left out? The idea that they were enjoying a parasocial fantasy and then exploded after the marriage-registration news is also hilarious lol. Even someone like me who has no interest in actors got the impression, just from things I’d casually heard, that Koo Kyo-hwan had been in a long-term relationship and they were practically married. Are you saying the supposed fans deliberately ignored all that and squeezed out whatever fantasy suited them? Good grief, lol.

I was horrified reading the early tweets and relieved when I got to the later ones. Seriously, learn to maintain some distance. Enough with the “but I spent money” x100. You’re not whining at a host bar, so why are there this many weird people? Whether it’s celebrities or chefs, calm down and act within reason!
