People are surprisingly split over this story about a friend not refunding someone who canceled a trip

A friend missed a three-person trip to care for their mother, and another friend brought a boyfriend to fill the spot.

Even if you replace the boyfriend with literally any third person, that spot was already out of your hands

vs.

It's not that they chose not to go—they couldn't. If someone else took the spot, the money should be refunded

People are seriously way more evenly split than you'd expect

Keep the money or refund it?

Keep the money1. I couldn't go because of my own circumstances, so why would I get a refund? It's not like I found the replacement lol

Refund the money2. If the two of them had gone, I would've accepted not getting it back. But if someone else went, I think that person should pay. Ah, but putting all that aside, I'd cut off someone that boy-crazy

They couldn't go because of personal circumstances, and it would've been hard to find someone else, so they figured they still had to pay even if they couldn't physically go... But you found a replacement? Then you should refund your friend. Even if they can't go, that remaining spot belongs to the person who paid for it. Why are you using it however you want?
