Musical theater’s “star marketing” backfires as cash-strapped audiences turn to plays and ballet
Top stars such as Cho Seung-woo, Park Hyo-shin, and Kim Junsu are reportedly paid around 50–60 million won per performance when they take leading roles in musicals, nearly half the ticket revenue from a typical large theater with 1200 seats. The burden of those high fees ultimately leads to higher ticket prices, with the full cost passed on to audiences.

If the fee per performance is half the ticket revenue per performance, does everyone else work for free when there are 2 star actors? What kind of nonsense is that?
It’s a stretch to say ticket prices rose solely because of actors’ fees, but that really is what actors who sell out every appearance get paid per performance... Compared with other actors playing the same role, the fee gap can be anywhere from dozens to even 100 times as much.
How do they explain shows being insanely expensive even without stars? They used star marketing as an excuse to shamelessly raise the average price too.
