On a cool autumn evening, gentle lights descend over the waters of 포항운하. 낙화놀이 is a traditional Korean fireworks art in which charcoal powder is wrapped in hanji and slowly burned. Since it uses no gunpowder, it does not burst like firecrackers; instead, the lights gradually spread along 낙화 ropes stretched across the canal. Two 75-meter 낙화 ropes are installed diagonally, creating a brilliant view that fills the canal night and its surface with light. At 포항운하, once cut off and restored through the efforts of local citizens, the industrial city’s symbol of fire and the symbol of restoration, water, meet in a single scene. With no official ceremonies or singer performances, this festival is devoted entirely to 낙화 and music for citizens and visitors.
