The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and has been a topic of discussion since, with Lisa and those behind the film engaging with the press ahead of the official release. Some of the previewed content has already drawn mixed reactions.
Recently, Lisa and and film’s director Sue Kim spoke more about the movie’s development, including some obstacles faced.
Kim shared that she wanted to make the movie more than “K-Pop movie” and focus on Lisa’s growth and development as a star.
It was a film about someone who had achieved a great amount of success in a K-pop girl group, but we were covering her year away from that, kind of discovering herself and figuring out a new path for her solo career.
— Sue Kim, Always Lalisa director
However, Kim was unable to highlight Lisa’s early career in the way she wanted due to YG Entertainment not allowing footage or music featuring BLACKPINK to be licensed.
Despite our best efforts, we were not allowed to license the music or the footage, so that was it. That was our only interaction with her previous label and the small amount of the K-pop lore that I wanted to bring into it, we weren’t able to.
— Kim
After the release of the interview, this portion was discussed with many fans expressing anger with YG Entertainment.
