Behind Dead-End Job’s clown casting… “We tracked down the real thing; the ‘real-deal clown’ trend was a lucky break” [X’s Interview]

Dead-End Job’s clown was played by mime artist and circus performer Lee Sung-hyung, who works under the name Marine Boy.

The person who played the character was Lee Sung-hyung, a mime artist and circus performer who works under the name Marine Boy. Director Kim Da-min said that day, “We thought long and hard about whether to train an established actor people already know, or take the risk on a real clown performer who had never acted for the screen.”

Kim Da-min continued, “I thought the clown would work better if there was something uncanny about them and it was a face people didn’t recognize. So we tracked down a clown from the performing arts world and met them in person.”

Kim Da-min also expressed satisfaction, saying, “Senior Yoon Kyung-ho said, ‘That was genuinely incredible,’ too. Even though it wasn’t a long part, every time Lee Sung-hyung came in, Lee Sung-hyung adapted and delivered a performance suited to the screen.”

The so-called “real-deal clown” had also recently become a trend in entertainment. Kim Da-min drew laughs by saying, “We’d actually started filming much earlier, but then all this clown stuff started blowing up. We thought it would die down by the time ours came out. We lucked into it.”

Executive producer Han Jun-hee also drew laughs by saying, “At first, I didn’t even know what ‘real-deal clown’ meant. I think it worked in our favor.”

The clown episode was my favorite. Seriously, they were so good lol. Real-deal clowns are the best.

Whoa, the clown was seriously so good at acting. I had no idea they weren’t an actor lol. That’s wild.

But the facial acting was as good as any established actor’s. I thought it was a famous actor under the makeup and I just couldn’t recognize them.
