[GOING SEVENTEEN] EP.155 Red Ball #2

What happened

SEVENTEEN members faced a game-theory style dilemma over whether to prioritize personal gain or group loyalty on their variety show GOING SEVENTEEN. In episode 155, members had to secretly choose between options that would reward themselves or the team, with their decisions and reactions broadcast to both teammates and viewers.

Why Koreans care

This type of segment taps into a long-running Korean variety tradition of testing "의리 (uiri, loyalty)" versus "개인주의 (gaeinjuui, individualism)" in group settings, reflecting deeper cultural tensions between collectivist values and rising individualism among younger generations. The explicit discussion of money (900,000 won, about $670) and the visible monitoring of choices by other members play into Korean anxieties about trust, betrayal, and the social consequences of prioritizing self-interest, which are frequent themes in both entertainment and everyday discourse.

In the Korean comments

1. Fandom: Some commenters humorously compare the interactions between Seungkwan and Joshua to relationship dynamics, saying, "Watching Seungkwan talk with Shua felt like watching 'Transit Love'—my new year was you, who made it like this, haha. Seungkwan is like the anxious girlfriend, Joshua is a mix of the stable and avoidant boyfriend." 2. Fandom: There is playful analysis of members' personalities based on their choices, with fans teasing those who chose the green ball for being practical or "money-focused," but in an affectionate, non-critical way. 3. Minority: A few express mock disappointment or feigned betrayal at members who chose personal gain, but this is framed as part of the fun rather than genuine criticism.

What the words mean

Foreign viewers might miss that the overt talk about "betrayal" and "loyalty" is tongue-in-cheek and rooted in a long-standing Korean entertainment trope, not a sign of real interpersonal conflict. The joking comparisons to dating shows like "환승연애 (Hwansung Yeonae, Transit Love)" are also a playful way for fans to dramatize member interactions, not to be taken as serious relationship commentary.
