BTS’s RM Addresses Xenophobia Allegations, Sparks Further Criticism

BTS leader RM has drawn significant attention after speaking up directly about the controversy surrounding his recent Weverse post.

In the post, RM addressed fans in Peru, urging them not to show up at the hotel where the group was staying, reasoning that the constant noise and crowding had made them a nuisance to the hotel staff and other guests. He also mentioned other South American countries and Asia, where the group will be heading to for their world tour next, and requested fans to maintain decorum.

Following this post, netizens shared footage of dangerous crowds gathering outside BTS’s hotel, with loud screaming and even lasers being pointed into their rooms.

Despite the context of RM’s post, many Peruvian and South American fans felt hurt by the fact that he had singled out their countries, despite the fact that BTS have gotten mobbed in the US and Europe as well. Many accused the BTS leader of being xenophobic over this.

While the discourse created a divide among BTS fans, RM chose to address the issue head-on during BTS’s second concert in Lima on October 9. He called out the crowding, pointing of lasers, and breach of privacy, but also emphasized that his letter was not directed toward Latin America alone, but to fans all over the globe. He reassured that BTS would never discriminate among fans based on nationalities, and urged fans not to pay attention to such divisive discourses.

Namjoon in his speech today

"Peruvians! You are truly the best.

I’m going to talk about the post I wrote yesterday, and I’ll speak in Korean.

The post I wrote yesterday wasn’t just about America or Peru.Similar things have happened in Europe and the United States, and they’ve… pic.twitter.com/z3hWFj4oic

This direct response was welcomed by many fans, and RM received high praise for his mature way of handling such a tricky situation.

"Some people will only hear what they want to hear and see what they want to see." That part of his speech, he literally ate and is 100% correct! https://t.co/TfQAqUE3Ar pic.twitter.com/LbGdvnTs0e

He says, I am responsible for what I said not for your lack of intellect and comprehension skills. Anyways, find that fucker that was using the laser and make him an example 😒 https://t.co/yKzEZ2Uyy2

mind you this was obvious from the post itself. but like he said, we gotta ignore the ones who intentionally misunderstand. and good on him on insisting on that boundary for their own health. it IS crazy.

and isn't it obvious there's always good fans that get ignored in this bs https://t.co/TJqfi2J2er

However, it has also triggered a new wave of criticism against RM. Many fans saw this moment as proof that he was aware of everything fans talk about on social media and that him remaining silent on the controversy over his association with Chris Brown was a deliberate choice.

so, let me get this straight, he sees what we say on social media, he can speak up and decided to stay silent on the chris brown situation. of course accusing them of xenophobia is a Crazy thing to do, and i get it why he addressed it. i wonder why he did not address the CB issue https://t.co/o1zW2MeXV7

They see everything we say in online. They know everything. Still they have been choosing only silence when they need to speak up for their controversial actions….. Great. https://t.co/OHK0xGxCN8

so this situation deserves being addressed not once but twice and with a whole letter, a whole ass speech, but when we asked to address what's been going on since august y'all just ignored us? noted https://t.co/EaxWlgVCo1

oh so he does see our discourse?? funny how he is so fast to come out and clarify that he just 'happened' to make that post while on LATAM and that he's not xenophobic but it's crickets for the 'supporting the potential feminicide woman beater' https://t.co/e3ENwHCnUq

The controversy in question occurred when RM and J-Hope were seen at a Chris Brown concert in August, following which, they were also seen posing with the singer for his Instagram post. Despite the heavy backlash that followed, with many ARMYs demanding an apology, neither of the members ever addressed the situation.
