Jeong Ji-sun: “A Gen Z employee told me chain-smoking after work makes them happy... I was caught off guard” (You Quiz on the Block)
Chef Jeong Ji-sun shared the unexpected answer a young employee gave when asked what makes them happy these days.
“Even in interviews, I’m not interested in the life someone has lived. I care more about their future. I ask, ‘What’s your dream for the future? What are you thinking of doing next? What makes you happy these days?’ I think you need to have a dream. I think you need to stick to a plan. But when I asked a 21-year-old, ‘What makes you happy these days?’ they said, ‘Getting off work in an hour and chain-smoking.’ Their idea of happiness was so different from mine. I thought we’d have a constructive conversation about the future, like opening a café,” she said, adding, “I was really caught off guard.”

It’s because they didn’t want to have that kind of conversation with her. When my boss asks me stuff, I just give some throwaway answer too.
It sounds like she’s so interested in the future that she asks things like that both in interviews and with her employees. The employee said chain-smoking after work was what they looked forward to... It doesn’t exactly sound great, but I get it. Knitting after work is what I look forward to too... Whatever happens to work, happens...
I think it was: she cares more about an interviewee’s future than their past > but when she asked one of her employees, the employee had no plans for the future. Either way, saying something like that to the boss in the first place is just... And a chef who smokes, too. I really don’t get why they handle workplace relationships like that.
