RIIZE Fan Meeting Highlights

In the Korean comments

Two comments praise the group for not holding back and not putting on a front. One reads, in translation, "RIIZE, a super-teto, cheerful, manly-man group, the guys who do it all without backing out when BRIIZE likes it!! Truly the best." In the original, the words doing the work are ㅆ테토 (ssteto), 쾌남 (kwaenam, cheerful, straightforward guy) and 상남자 (sangnamja, manly man). The 테토 (teto) is internet slang, from "testosterone," for a bold, masculine type of man. 브리즈 (beurijeu, BRIIZE) is RIIZE's fandom name. Another comment calls RIIZE a collection of men with no 가오 (gao, cool-guy pose). Two comments bring up cats, and both say "again." One greets "여섯냥이들" (yeoseot nyangi-deul, the six kitties) with "back again!" The other says, in translation, "Let's do the cat thing as a group again... so cute." The 냥 (nyang) in 냥이 (nyangi, kitty) is the sound of a meow. Four of the 15 comments in this sample name Eunseok, and each picks out something different. One asks why Eunseok is such a perfect fit. One says Eunseok is really enjoying it. One says Eunseok tries the hardest and is so cute they could die. One laughs at Eunseok's mouth shape and finishes with a cat word, 돌냥이 (dolnyangi, a cat word). These are individual impressions, not a description of the video.

What the words mean

가오없는 (gao-eomneun, without gao): 가오 (gao) is slang borrowed from the Japanese word for "face." It means the cool front or pride a person keeps up, and 가오 잡다 (gao japda, to strike a cool pose) is to put that on. Literally, the comment calls the group men "with no gao." In context it means they don't bother posing cool. Register: teasing but fond, since the comment carries a heart emoji. 찰떡 (chaltteok): literally a chewy, sticky glutinous rice cake. As slang it means a perfect fit. One comment says "은석이 왜이리 찰떡이냐" (Eunseogi waeiri chaltteogi-nya, why is Eunseok such a perfect fit). The "why" is an exclamation of admiration, not a real question, and the comment does not say what Eunseok fits. Register: casual, affectionate praise. 열일 (yeoril), 존나 (jonna) and 개큰감사요 (gae-keun gamsayo): one comment thanks the 챌린지팀 (chaellinji-tim, challenge team) in slang that looks rough but is gratitude. 열일 (yeol-il, working hard) is short for 열심히 일하다 (yeolsimhi ilhada, to work hard). 존나 (jonna, damn; extremely) is a crude intensifier, roughly "damn." The 개 (gae, super-; very) in 개큰감사요 (gae-keun gamsayo, huge thanks) is literally "dog," but as a prefix it means "super," so the phrase is "super-big thanks."
